Protecting our planet’s diverse wildlife requires bold actions and dedicated teamwork. A study conducted in Thailand’s Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary provides insights into the complex challenges of tiger conservation and highlights that tiger recovery in Southeast Asia may be slower than global targets anticipate. This study focuses on understanding how a small population of wild tigers in a protected area in Southeast Asia has been changing over time, especially after increased efforts to stop illegal hunting. The study used motion-activated cameras over eight years to monitor a small population of wild tigers in the sanctuary, which covers about 2,780 square kilometers. The cameras helped identify individual tigers and track their survival and new births from 2006 to 2012. The researchers observed that tiger numbers remained very low, less than 4 tigers per 100 square kilometers, and fluctuated over time despite increased conservation efforts. The goal was to count how many tigers were there, see how many survived each year, how many new tigers were born or moved into the area, and how these numbers changed over time.
The findings showed that the tiger population was very low compared to similar places in India. Despite efforts to increase protection, the tiger numbers fluctuated and remained slow to recover. While intensified patrols and law enforcement activities commenced around 2006, they coincided with some improvements in tiger survival and recruitment. However, the study emphasizes that these observations are correlational and cannot definitively establish causality, as it was an observational study without experimental control. The statistical support for a direct link between protection efforts and increases in the tiger population was weak, and the authors caution against interpreting these results as proof that increased patrolling alone can guarantee population recovery.
The authors suggest that ongoing poaching remains a significant threat, with some evidence indicating that poaching pressure could contribute to fluctuations in survival rates. However, this link was not conclusively demonstrated, as the evidence was based on plausible but not definitive indicators.
