This project focuses on addressing the pressing issues of hunting, poaching, and the illegal trade of the Indian Pangolin, coupled with the economic challenges faced by forest-adjacent villagers. A rapid assessment in West Bengal revealed organized trading of pangolins and an average annual income of less than 50,000 for these families. Statistics from 2018 to 2022 show over 1200 pangolins poached, with Odisha experiencing the highest incidents. The project involves a local team, supported by the forest department and local administration, working to combat illegal trade. Importantly, the initiative ensures sustainability by enabling the local teams to continue their efforts post-project, aiming for lasting positive change in the community and effective wildlife conservation.
